On 6th April at 6pm Rosnay Organic Farm will host an innovative Art show, with presentation of stories from storyteller, artist, and educator Caroline Josephs.
The artist, Dr Caroline Josephs Ph.D., is an octogenarian, who swims a half km with hundreds of fish – every day of the year, winter and summer, in an ocean pool, near her home in Sydney. She has always considered herself ‘half-fish’!
So, she was fascinated and excited, to hear from her cyclist husband and his friends when they returned from visiting Canowindra in 2023, of their discovery of the fish fossils in the museum there.
Caroline was hugely stirred by the stories, and by the small pamphlet they brought, evidence that David Attenborough’s visit there in 2013 brought forward, when he stated that the Canowindra fish fossils were of ‘global significance’ linking us in a line of evolution going back 360 million years.
She has always had a strong interest in researching ancestors. So, after contacting the Age of Fishes Museum, she was happy to receive extra information and ‘reconstructions’ (simple graphic drawings) by the paleontologists of the various fish fossils found in the dig in 1992. In fact, one of her husband’s cyclist friends, had been on that very dig, in 1992.
She began to depict the fish, and herself painting each one as they may have been when alive all that time ago!
Caroline and her husband later visited Canowindra and met with the staff of the Museum, and also with the couple who purchased the land where the next dig is planned – the site adjacent to where the original find was discovered.
Caroline had completed a series of paintings of the fish fossils, inserting sometimes, her self-portrait, as a linking gesture towards these fossils as proven ancestors of all of us.
