Join The Great Glossy Count This Weekend! The Great Glossy Count 2023 is a citizen science event being held on the weekend of 9th and 10th September. It is run by BirdLife Australia in collaboration with the Glossy Black Conservancy and other organisations which work to conserve Glossies. The Count takes place across the distribution of the South-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo (south-eastern Queensland, eastern NSW, the ACT and eastern Victoria).
Volunteer citizen scientists will explore their selected survey site to collect data on Glossies and their feeding habitat. You can participate in the Count as part of a group or with a friend — it’s a great opportunity for people to enjoy time in nature while supporting the recovery of threatened birds.
The South-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo (also known as ‘Glossies’) was recently listed as Vulnerable under Australian legislation and is at risk of further population decline after losing large areas of feeding habitat during the Black Summer bushfires of 2019–20. They feed almost exclusively on seeds found in the cones of she-oak trees (Allocasuarina and Casuarina).

Who’s Gallery Talls Art Exhibition: The Who’s Gallery Talls Art Exhibition had a fantastic opening at Finns Store last Sunday, 3rd September. The event, which was opened by Libby Oldham, President of the Arts Council Cabonne, drew a large attendance. Catherine O’Brien, proprietor of Who’s Gallery, prepared a delectable meal for the guests. The exhibition will be on display until the end of September. During Finn’s business hours, you can purchase a booklet for $5 in order to vote.
Canowindra Show Flashback: How many people remember the iconic show event ‘The Sheaf Toss’ which was a big part of the Canowindra Show in days gone by? This event required a person with a pitch fork to toss a ‘sheaf’ (bag of straw ), weighing about 7kg, over a high jump style bar as high as they could. Competitors were allowed three tosses at each height but failure at that height eliminated you from the event. The eventual winner is the one who tosses the bag the highest. It was such fun to watch. The sheaf toss is a traditional Scottish agricultural sport event originally contested at country fairs and the world record is 18.53m, that’s high!
