Maps And Research Documents Uncovered In New Book

29 June, 2023 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Author Kate Gadsby with her book, Convicts Capitalists and Corruption. Kate welcomes you to meet with her at Orange City Library,18th July.

Author Kate Gadsby has just released a new book encouraging people to learn about maps and research documents from Australian history.

Australian history is author Kate Gadsby’s passion. An avid historian, she has spent much of the past 25 years researching the history of the Nubrygyn district, Euchareena. This research took her to the archives, libraries, Land Titles Office and mapping authorities of NSW.

Kate’s resulting book Convicts, Capitalists and Corruption spans the arrival of convict ships in Sydney Cove to exploration and settlement at Bathurst, Nubrygyn, Wellington and the land in the ‘outer limits’ beyond the Nineteen Counties. The book is also beautifully illustrated with maps, artworks and photographs from colonial masters.

Kate says Australians are fortunate to have a wealth of written European history dating back to James Cook and the landing of the First Fleet in 1788. Also, as these documents become digitised it makes them accessible for all Australians to share.

“A captivating history that won’t leave you disappointed. It is a gripping narrative portraying personal stories of Sydney’s society and convicts building the mountain road. Explore and immerse yourself in the history of the colony as the pioneers and prisoners move west of the Great Divide,” said Kate

You can have the opportunity to meet devoted historian and author Kate Gadsby at her free talk about Maps and Family History at Orange City Library on Tuesday, 18th July at 2pm. All are welcome. The event is part of Orange Family History Groups’ 40th Anniversary celebrations.
