Letter To The Editor
On behalf of the Dwyer family, I would like to thank the Canowindra community for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to us during our recent family reunion.
Thanks go out to the staff at Eddy’s, the Blue Jacket Motel, St Edward’s School, Canowindra Hotel, Canowindra Bowling Club, Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch, Foodworks, the Canowindra Bakery and Rosnay Wines.
Special mention must be made of the volunteers at the Canowindra Historical Society and Museum, particularly Jan Harrison, Chris Berkeley, new President, Jennifer Wythes and Bob and Shirley Robson. Your contributions were instrumental in the successful unveiling of a new plaque on the Pioneer Wall to honour my grandparent’s Tom and Tiny Dwyer, formerly of Waddell Street.
Tom and Tiny were long-time residents of Canowindra, with Tom operating a wool and skin buying store at 32 Ryall Street. Over time the business expanded with Tom becoming the local agent for Golden Fleece Petroleum. The business, known as M.T Dwyer and Son, was operated in partnership with my dad, Stan.
My dad eventually took up a position with Firestone Tyres which was located near the old Malouf’s Building in Blatchford Street. When dad got a promotion, my family moved away.
I would love to hear from anyone with information about my grandparents, Tom and Tiny Dwyer or my parents, Stan and Cath Dwyer.
Any information about M.T Dwyer and Son and/or Firestone Tyres would also be greatly appreciated, particularly any photos of either 32 Ryall Street or the Malouf’s Building/Firestone from the 1960s/70s.
I can be contacted by email at strumble061@gmail.com
Thank you once again, Canowindra. It was so lovely to be home.
Tracey Rumble (nee Dwyer)
