Last week you may have seen walkers in Canowindra or along the highway, and wondered what it was all about? The Canowindra Phoenix caught up with Toby Barrons, organiser of the annual Cargo to Grenfell Walk to find out the motivation behind the event.
Back in 2016, Toby Barron and Derek Robinson came up with the idea to walk from one regional town to another to raise money for a local football team. They soon realised it had the potential to have a positive impact on the surrounding towns by raising awareness of people suffering with mental health related issues.
Now in it’s 7th year, the Cargo to Grenfell fundraiser has seen some challenges along the way, but also a lot of growth in the efficiency and logistics of the event thanks to a strong volunteer committee.
This year saw 31 participants completing either one, two of all three days of the walk.
“New challenges bring great feats of determination, with certain individuals exceeding expectations. The hot weather conditions, particularly on Saturday, added extra challenges for the participants,” said Toby.
The group hopes to raise $15,000 for the Head Strong Foundation: a not-for-ptofit charity organisation dedicated to providing mental health resources to regional and remote communities of Australia
“Each year, to see community members put their bodies to the test, all for a great cause is something special. I am only one person in millions but want to make a difference and know that we have definitely helped people improve their wellbeing since the events inception in 2017,” said Toby.
