Our Gal – Keriba Neur

2 March, 2023 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Suzannah Tapim – Kerib Neur In Suzannah’s traditional language

How long have you lived in Canowindra? 12 years. I would also like to pay respect and acknowledge the traditional custodian of this land in which I live and work, the Wiradjuri people.

What do you like about living here? The community is not much different from where I’m originally from Murray (Mer) Island, Torres Straits FNQ. Everyone is so friendly here and are always happy to help when help is needed.

Do you have any nicknames? Being the tiniest framed sibling “skinny” was my nickname.

Are you involved in the community? I played league tag with the Canowindra Tigresses, ladies union with the Canowindra Pythons and will often help the senior league with bar and canteen during home games. I am currently working at Canowindra High School, running the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Program.

Your single best piece of advice? Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

If you had $10,000 to spend, how would you spend it? Trip back home to Murray (Mer) Island to visit my parents and to visit family across the Trans-Tasman in Wellington NZ.

What makes you happy? I’m happy when I am immersed in my Torres Strait Islander culture especially when I’m doing the traditional dancing with my family and even more when my three boys Santiago, Pedro and Jerry join me.
