Healthy headspace Tips For HSC Students

27 October, 2022 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The Canowindra High year 12 class of 2022 are among 75,000 students nationwide, currently sitting their HSC exams.

Recently on Thursday, 6th October headspace Cowra invited the local community to headspace Day. It was a day for the community to come together to empower young people, their family, and friends to take steps towards better mental health and wellbeing.

This year, headspace Cowra partnered with Cowra McDonald’s, Verto and Street-Smart Handbook to launch HSC study bags, these study bags were handed out on headspace Day.

These study bags were perfectly timed in conjunction with Central West HSC students beginning their HSC journey this month, it is important to know how we can support them if they begin to feel stressed or overwhelmed.

Chad White from headspace Cowra shares with us several tips’ students can use to help stress less during their exam period.

• Setting up a specific area that is designated for study. Choose an area that’s comfortable, filled with natural light and quiet enough to discourage distractions.

• Make sure furniture is comfortable and easily organised.

• Setting up a schedule is also important, making sure you have ample down time where you can fill with activities you enjoy.

• Study with a friend. Making a commitment to work with a friend can help you stay on track, share methods and ideas, and have fun.

• Minimize distractions. Turn off your device notifications, wear headphones to minimise noise.

• Set small, achievable goals. Ensure your goals are within reach and set small ones each day. It may be making sure you set yourself a small study goal, followed by a 20-minute walk.

• Remember to also reward yourself for achieving your goals.

If you or your child is feeling stressed or overwhelmed during this period, there are several things they can do.

Talk it out with family, teachers and friends. Work on self-care and self-managing tools and if it gets too much, they can seek help through organisations such as headspace, Beyond Blue, Reach Out and Kids Helpline.
