The History of Toogong, the first publication by the Canowindra Historical Society and Museum, will be releasing its third edition on Sunday, 30th October, following a thanksgiving service at St Albans Church, Toogong.
The society was formed in 1967, after enthusiasm and interest from community members, teachers and their students led to the formation of what is now the Canowindra Historical Society and Museum Inc.
One of the early research projects undertaken was the documentation of areas where members lived. Dorothy Balcomb compiled a “History of Toogong,” Dorothy’s local area.
Anglican Bishop Mark Calder will join with the local community in celebrating 150 years since the pise building was constructed in 1872. It was built by residents to fill the need for a place of worship in the growing township of Toogong, developing after the vast Toogong run began to be opened to the free settlers.
While the town, for various reasons did not develop as planned, it has always held a strong link to the early forebears of the district in the hearts of descendants of these pioneers.
This updated edition of ‘’History of Toogong” still contains the original writing of Dorothy Balcomb. Marion Gosper has been instrumental in adding more information on the families, the schools, as well as a good selection of photos to continue the story.
