In October we are encouraged to reconsider purchasing new items for a better future, bigger bank balance, healthier people and happier planet. The Buy Nothing New organisation has teamed up with Vinnies to encourage people to shop pre-loved in October.
Our local Vinnies has been supporting our community for a long time and many locals are familiar with the variety of goods that are available.
“In addition to clothing for men, women and children, we have everything from manchester including vintage sheets and linen, craft supplies and haberdashery,” explains Elizabeth Wilcox from Vinnies Canowindra Branch.
“We also have a huge selection of toys, books, DVDs, crockery, jewellery, accessories and shoes. You just never know what you will find at Vinnies,” said Elizabeth.
With the festive season fast approaching, sourcing everything from gifts, formal wear and partyware can be easily done all in the one store, with people finding unique ways to upcycle, repurpose and recycle. One of the suggestions from Buy Nothing New is to use vintage crockery and tableware instead of disposable.
The change of season is also a time to rethink purchasing new and consider your local Op-Shop.
“We always have brand name labels in store and a number of high-end clothing items with prices from $10 to $50, it’s a very affordable way to shop,” said Elizabeth.
Another way to support the cause is to donate items instead of sending them to landfill. Donations can be left in store or in the donation bins behind the building. The general rule being if you would give it to a friend, you can give it to Vinnies.
