Flash flooding and road closures caused delays across the greater Canowindra area last Friday, 16th September.
Over 80mm of rain drenched the region in the 24 hours to Friday morning, causing creek and river systems to flood the areas of Canowindra, Molong and Eugowra. As predicted, the Belubula River reached a peak of 3.90m as of 2am (bom.gov.au)
The rain event was significantly more damaging as it is the third consecutive La Nina season to hit our already drenched soils and high river systems.
Several local roads were also impacted by rising flood waters, including Belubula Way and Reg Hailstone Road.
Local SES crews were on hand to assist residents over the course of the event; however, the public were urged to avoid any water over road scenario and be aware that some local roads may not have been assessed and to proceed with caution.
“SES Canowindra crew had been monitoring the situation since the early hours of Friday morning. Thank you to all the people of Canowindra who were doing the right thing by preparing early and avoiding flood water,” said SES Commander Canowindra Unit, Owen Lloyd.
“It looks as though it is going to continue to be a very wet spring and summer so continue to follow websites such as the BOM for updates. If you are in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to call 13 25 00,” Owen concluded.
