The Canowindra Cooperating Anglican and Uniting Churches are redeveloping the Uniting Church in Blatchford Street into a Community Life Centre to better meet the needs of the community.
From research undertaken over the years, the groups being targeted initially are lonely older people, families who have various issues, single parents, and young people with mental health issues.
A Foodbasket has been operating weekly from these premises since 2009 with over 600 clients registered since that time, and will continue as part of the new centre.
The goals of the centre will enable and encourage the community to be supported and cared for through support, networks, activities and particular agencies able to support the identified needs will visit.
A reference group has been convened with representatives from the churches and community to oversee the evolvement of the centre. It is expected that a coordinator will be appointed to coordinate and plan activities in the future.
The buildings will include spaces for consultations, counselling, group meetings and activities that best support the people accessing services.
A kitchen, meeting area, an internet kiosk and an activities area will be available to individual practitioners, agencies and organisations. There will be a nominal charge for their usage.
An Information Day has been planned to enable individuals, agencies and organisations to hear about the centre and the opportunities for services to support the community.
The Information Day will be held on Wednesday 3rd August with sessions at 10am and 6.30pm at the Canowindra CWA Hall.
