Little Lift From The Big Lift

5 May, 2022 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The Big Lift volunteers at Canowindra Public School.

Canowindra was delighted to recently host a group of happy, vibrant and hardworking young people from UTS in Sydney who travelled up to assist the community in completing some community jobs for the purpose of giving a ‘lift’ to rural communities.

The Big Lift is a student-run volunteering organisation at The University of Technology Sydney, founded in 2010 on the philosophy of ‘paying it forward’. They provide a platform for students to volunteer and engage deeply with local and regional communities.

The students were on hand to help at St Edward’s Primary School, Canowindra Public School and Canowindra Pre-School for a ‘little lift’ weekend before the recent rain arrived.

Little Lifts are the weekend volunteering trips to regional towns in NSW. UTS students stayed in Canowindra for two nights in the Canowindra Public School Hall while they volunteered with the community and completed 12 hours of service projects.

Jobs completed by the students included cleaning and spreading new sand in the sandpits, digging up and restoring soft fall under the play equipment, distributing wood chips to gardens, spreading mulch and weeding.

“A huge thank you to the students from UTS – The Big Lift, who volunteered their time to help out in the gardens at the Pre-School. What a wonderful bunch of people. We are so grateful for your hard work and generosity of spirit,” said Bronwin Lay, Director at Canowindra Pre-School.
