Dear Editor,
The one good thing about COVID is that it has given us all time to contemplate our lives and situations. I’ve become really aware of just how much discontent there is in this country; people being ‘offended’, young people being bored, isolation and loneliness, navel gazing, growing activism, reduced numbers of people having children…the list goes on.
I believe it’s part of a trend towards selfishness and greed, fuelled by the anxiety that any minute now the world is going to go up in smoke.
‘Nature’ has been here longer than us. It got through volcanic eras, at least one ice age we know about, global drought, a global flood, and changing sea patterns that created islands and exposed land bridges. We’ve had two World Wars, global flu and plagues, continual regional wars and conflict, and global depressions and economic collapses.
People have been moving around the world looking for better lives since boats were built. We’re still here to date. It’s great to think we can ‘save’ the environment, make things more humane for animals and be generous to literacy programs.
But if we don’t start to really look after each other and our communities then we may as well give up. Get rid of the racist feelings, get rid of the need to have the last word, get rid of the need to pull down others, offer a helping hand when you don’t feel like it.
Who knows, Australia might begin to heal itself.’
Cheers
Sylvia Skelton
