Local businesses were caught by surprise and sustained damage last Friday, 26 December, when heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in Gaskill Street.
Foodworks Canowindra was one of many businesses in Gaskill Street negatively impacted by the floodwater. Store Manager, Garry Hundal said, “It affected us in so many ways! There was a blackout, then we had trouble with our back dock which was full of water and some of my stock was destroyed by flood water. It just happened within seconds.”
Further down Gaskill Street, The Canowindra Historical Museum also sustained damage to fixtures and fittings as well as some artefacts. Spokesperson for the Museum, Chris Berkeley said, “It appears that the drains at the rear of the museum and the Railway Precinct were blocked by rubbish and rainwater backed up in the area in front of the museum buildings to a depth of about 90mm judging by the “tideline” on the buildings. Water could also have entered from Gaskill Street and Memorial Park.”
The Canowindra Business and Progress Association (CBPA) is encouraings all businesses commercial, retail or agricultural to email through a report of their damages. “We will provide this feedback to the NSW Business Chamber for them to advocate for disaster relief,” said Antonio D’Onise, President of the CBPA.
