On Saturday 10th May at 2 PM, 6 students from the Con playing brass instruments and drums, will be in concert at All Saints’ Church, Canowindra. David Miller AM, Director of Ensembles will accompany them for some of the program playing the Collard & Collard concert grand piano which now resides at All Saints’. David Miller is himself an internationally renowned pianist teaching music at the Con since 1980. He is currently president of the Accompanists’ Guild of NSW and is very active in promoting piano accompamiment as an independent art form worthy of professional recognition and academic research.
The students, all in their early 20s are undergraduate or post greduate students in their respective instruments, on this occasion, two trumpets, trombone, French horn, tuba and drums. Their areas of interest include classical, jazz and contemporary music. As they all started their formal musical education between the age of 8 and 14, they already have a collective wealth of experience playing in Australia and abroad with ensembles, orchestras and bands.
This will be something of a milestone as David Miller’s 15th annual autumn visit to Canowindra. He is sure to see a large group of familiar faces in the audience and in the hall afterwards where he and the younger musos mix with the concert goers over a glass of wine and other culinary delights. This has become a well established tradition and David says, “Canowindra is always the highlight of our Grand Western Tour which has grown from just Canowindra in the formative years, to take in now concerts and masterclasses in Cowra, Parkes, Young, Molong, Orange and Bathurst during our ten day tour”.
