Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators.
Central West Libraries Reading and Writing Coordinator, Jasmine Vidler said it’s a time for teachers and librarians to conduct activities relating to the theme to highlight the importance of reading.
CBCA Book Week and the 2021 theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. “At Canowindra we will be celebrating Book Week with the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted books on display and ready to borrow at the end of Book Week,” Ms Vidler said.
“We also have a writing and drawing competition which can be accessed online with the competition now extended to Wednesday 15 September 2021.”
The drawing competition is open to children from grades Kindergarten to Year 2. Children are asked to draw a picture of their favourite place in the world – real or imaginary. The Writing Competition is open to children from Grades 3 – 6. We are asking them to write a short story about their favourite places in the world, real or imaginary. There are prizes to be won.
“There is a wide variety of shortlisted books this year, with some serious books on challenging topics and others playful and entertaining,” she said.
“There is certainly something for everyone and adults will enjoy dipping into the books with some thoughtful reads in the Older Readers section.”
It is also well worth a look at the Picture Book of the Year and New Illustrator of the Year categories for the wonderful artworks in books too.
Book Week is a wonderful time of year to celebrate Australian authors, books, reading and often children get dressed up as their favourite book characters.
