Local Election Postponed For Three Months

29 July, 2021 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty says the delay is no problem.

The Cabonne Council election has been postponed again. All NSW local government elections have been postponed until at least December 4, due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Sydney and other areas of the state.

Cabonne Mayor, Councillor Kevin Beatty said the current council will continue to work together toward common goals, with the public’s health its main focus. “Cabonne Council respects the decision of the NSW Government to delay the Local Government Elections,” Councillor Beatty said.

“Cabonne Council’s number one priority is the safety of the Cabonne community, and therefore it is important that proper planning is undertaken to ensure the elections can be delivered in a COVID-safe way.”

Given an outbreak of COVID-19 threatened Cabonne residents, and we’ve experienced lockdown because of this, the Mayor said the state government has sage advice, and better to be safe than sorry.

“This decision was not made lightly, and was done so in consultation with the NSW Electoral Commissioner and NSW Health,” he said. “We are grateful that COVID-safe Local Government elections will take place before the end of 2021 in order to uphold democracy.”

He said the three-month postponement can be seen as a positive. “Nominations for candidates were due to open on Monday, but this has also been postponed for three months. I would encourage anyone who is passionate about serving their local community to consider nominating for Council,” he said.

Nominations will instead be postponed until October 25.
