The current Tigers first grade smashed the Trundle Boomers last weekend with win of 24-20.
Canowindra loves its footy. For one hundred years, the game has been played by the Canowindra Rugby League Club, the mighty Tigers. Make that one hundred and one years. Despite footy mania never leaving the town, the Tigers’ centenary celebrations had to be put on hold last year, like many events thanks to COVID restrictions.
This year, the Club’s planned celebrations are bigger than ever, involving a weekend of catching up with old players and friends, delicious food and of course, a few games of footy.
The weekend is expected to draw a host of ex-players, coaches and former residents, with many from the 1960 grand final side planning to attend. Rooms in Canowindra and Cowra are booking quickly, as players make the pilgrimage back to Tigers ground.
The first event will be a meet and greet; a chance for players and supporters to catch up at the Canowindra Bowling Club from 4pm. Saturday sees the Tigers face off against Cargo at Tom Clyburn Oval. Kick off will be 11am and a jumper presentation will follow. First grade players will be presented jumpers from past players and life members. League tag will begin at 2:30pm, followed by a game day presentation on home ground.
The formal celebrations will take place at the Canowindra Services Club auditorium, with doors opening at 6:30pm. The night will see Eddie Clyburn (1920-1960) speak on the early history of the Tigers, followed by talks from past presidents and life members such as Ian “Boundah” Breen (1960-1978), Roger and Barry Traves (1979-1990), Ray “Bimbo” Melhuish, Andrew “Pully” Pull (1991-2000) and more.
“We have people coming back from the late 60s, early 70s and all through the 80s. Most of the premier side people will be there,” said Barry Traves. “The Jack Hore Cup will be on display, with Chris from the Historical Society.”
