Holy Week Begins

1 April, 2021 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The Anglican, Uniting and Catholic Churches of Canowindra celebrated Palm Sunday last week with a procession through town.

Last weekend, Palm Sunday was celebrated around the world, kicking off what is known as Holy Week. In Canowindra, the Anglican, Uniting and Catholic congregations joined together to celebrate Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem surrounded by palm branches and shouts of hallelujahs.

The journey began with the biblical account of the event and the congregants processed, with palm branches, banners and palm crosses, from All Saints Anglican to St Edwards Catholic Church. At St Edwards, the congregation sang hymns and worshipped together. A sermon was given about Jesus’ journey to the cross by Anglican and Uniting minister, Reverend Joy Harris. Morning tea was shared at St Edward’s School after the service.

This occasion highlighted unity in the Canowindra Christian community as they entered Holy Week.

The Anglican and Uniting Church will be commemorating Maundy Thursday on 1 April at 6pm at Cranbury Uniting Church. A Good Friday service will follow on 2 April at All Saints Canowindra. On Saturday, an Easter vigil and Holy Communion service will be held at 5pm at St Matthews, Eugowra. An Easter Sunday service will take place at 9:30am at All Saints Canowindra.
