Celebrating CHS Students

25 March, 2021 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

School captain Claire Wright with coordinator for Youth Forum For Student Voice Phil Brown and Darcy Merchant.

Canowindra High School’s Claire Wright has been representing Central West NSW at the National Rural Youth Ambassadors conference in Canberra. She joined with students from South Australia, Victoria and across NSW to work collaboratively, as  advocates for the youth of their states. The team worked late into the nights, developing proposals to present to the ministers and dignitaries. They spent time at Parliament House, where they presented their key ideas: schools working together, mental health and after school information. This was a highly valuable experience and has allowed Claire to further develop her leadership skills, as well as expand her network of likeminded young people. This came from Claire’s passion to be a voice for rural youth. Claire, along with fellow ambassador Darcy Merchant, have been involved in the NSW conferences throughout 2020, which culminated in their coordination of a Canowindra High School’s Youth Forum For Student Voice. Their coordinator Phil joined them for this forum, emphasising its importance and value. We are extremely proud of Claire and Darcy and the legacy they are establishing at Canowindra High.

Emily Thomas, year 9 and Lila McCaffery, year 8, travelled to Homebush in Sydney to compete in the 2021 NSW Junior Athletics Competition. Both girls competed at state level hammer throw. Emily competed in the U16s and threw at 37.01m and received 1st place, while Lila competed in the U15s and threw 34.33m finishing in 4th place. A massive congratulations to both girls. Also, a huge congratulations to Sammy Austin for making it into the Western Region Open boys squash team.

It has been a time for sport at Canowindra High School. Congratulations to Ben McMahon, Hannah Greenhill, Hannah Gordon, Lillian Harrison, Harry Duguid, Archie McDonald, Noah Brown, Bella Gordon, Hayley Stephens, Amy Harrison, Rianna Reeves, Mitch Stephens and Mitchell McMahon who attended the Western Area swimming trials in Dubbo. There were some fantastic results.
