I would like to clarify a comment made in Letters to the Phoenix on 21 January 2021. This is in relation to the Phoenix Palms which have become quite a feature in Morris Park Canowindra.
The area was designated as common ground for the town prior to being cleared and developed as a park. During the early years of the 1930s depression, Boree Council (at Cudal) engineer Lloyd Morris undertook the supervision of a work for the dole programme to provide work for unemployed men.
This included the plantings in the newly developed park and also plantings of many street trees such as the hardy Carob trees on Rodd Street.
Canowindra, like many country towns, did plant trees as a memorial to soldiers of the Great War. Soldiers Memorial Drive going out towards Moyne was their tribute.
The golden poplar trees became quite a feature during autumn. Over the years some have been replaced as required to continue this memorial avenue.
