Live Life with Better Hearing

As part of your health checkup, Australian Hearing is reminding residents of the Central West about the importance of maintaining good hearing health. Australian Hearing provides subsidised hearing care for eligible people, including pensioners and most veterans.

Now is the perfect time for you to do something about your hearing and have a free hearing check.

“The positives of seeking help for hearing loss far outweigh the negatives. Not only do most people who receive some sort of hearing device report improved hearing, they also report an overall increase in the quality of their lives.” explains Debra Clarke-McSephney, Manager at Australian Hearing  Orange.

“People should also remember that losing your hearing doesn’t always lead to a hearing aid. Sometimes it’s just hearing the television, conversing on the phone or hearing the doorbell that’s the issue. There are many solutions available to help improve your everyday hearing.”

For more information call Australian Hearing on 6393 0500.

Yoga Improves the Mind and the Body

Historically, yoga was more than just a method of teaching; it was a way of life. The practice of yoga as a whole gives many more benefits than you might think: It lower stress and improves your mood: Specific meditation techniques used in yoga focuses the mind on your breathing and quietens the constant ‘mind’ chatter, relives stress and allows you to feel relaxed. Yoga boosts your confidence: The process works by releasing tension from your mind so you can feel confident about your physical body during meditation. Lowers risk of injury: often strenuous exercise engages an imbalance of opposing muscle groups whereas yoga concentrates on balancing this activity. Yoga unites your body and mind therefore allows you to move in a way that results in an injury free, healthier you. Benefits breathing and lowers blood pressure: if you practice yoga consistently, your lung capacity will increase as a result of the deep breathing process. Meditations and calming yoga slows down your heart rate which in turn lower blood pressure and has been known to improve your immune system and lowering cholesterol.

Maintaining Good Eye Health

Don’t take your eye health for granted, protect your eyesight. Eat for good vision: studies have shown that nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins C and E may help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular (salmon, vegetables, eggs, nuts, oranges and other citrus fruits). Quit smoking: smoking makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration. Studies show that the more times you try to quit smoking, the more likely you are to succeed, don’t give up! Wear Sunglasses: the right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Look away from the computer: Staring at a computer screen can cause; eyestrain, blurry vision, difficulty focusing at a distance, dry eyes, headaches, neck, back and shoulder pain. Choose suitable glasses that help with contrast, glare and eye strain when using a computer, every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking away for at least 20 seconds, and at least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15 minute break.
