Awareness The Key For Trivia Night

24 October, 2019 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

The band practices ahead of the mental awareness trivia night that is being held at the Canowindra Services Club this Saturday night.

Better awareness of mental health services will be at the forefront of a trivia night event at the Canowindra Services Club this Saturday, according to organiser Eleena Markcrow.

The event is set to be a massive evening, with a number of rounds of trivia happen- ing, plus a lucky draw, the judging of the best dressed guest, and live music all taking place.

Local mental health expert Dianne Gill will also be on hand to give a presentation on all the services that are available to people experiencing mental health troubles.

It is the first time that this event is taking place. Eleena said she was inspired to organise the event earlier this year.

“One of the local businesses, who knew of someone in need of help, approached me earlier in the year and suggested I try to organise an event that raises awareness of mental health,” she said.

“So I thought I would put something together that could get the entire community involved, and that’s why I decided to host our trivia night.”

“When I was approached by the business, it made me realise that people need to know who to talk to or where to go to get the information they need if they need help with their mental health,” she said.

“That’s why we have Dianne Gill from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program joining us and informing us about the local services that are available to support those experiencing issues in mental health. She’s a very hard worker, and I’m very thankful to have her available.”

Dianne said it was important for people to know that mental health issues needed to be acted on as soon as possible.

“One in four of us will need mental health support in a year, and one in two will need it in a lifetime,” she said.

“I really encourage people to come forward and open up and have a conversation about it. Something as small as that often make the biggest of differences in the long run.”

As well as the presentation by Dianne, there will also be posters, flyers and brochures on mental health services available for people to collect or take a look through.

Proceedings on the night will see the rounds of trivia taking place, in which a winner will be crowned and will receive a prize.

There will also be other prizes on offer throughout the night, including one for the best dressed guest, as well as the winners of each round of trivia, and a lucky door prize. A local band will also perform on the night.

Eleena said she was appreciative of all of the sponsors that had donated or covered the costs of each prize and supported the event.
