Find Your Treasure This Book Week

22 August, 2018 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

It is one of every child’s favourite weeks at school – the annual Children’s Book Council  of Australia Book Week which is being held this week at schools in and around Canowindra. It is a time when children and parents can get creative together and come up with a costume to wear to school. The theme this
year is Find Your Treasure so the costume possibilities are endless!

The Canowindra Pre-School children were treated on Tuesday this week, with a special visit from Tommy “Pirate” Jeffs who entertained and maybe even scared the children with his Pirate costume and impersonation. He read the story “Sunk” by Rob Biddulph to around 30 Pre-Schoolers in the Gumtree
room. Tommy entertained the children with the book and even handed out chocolates from his treasure chest after the reading to the delight of the children!

On Thursday 23rd August (today) the Canowindra community will come together for the annual community reading day to be held at Canowindra Public School from 9.30am to 12.30pm. There will be activities, book readings, a fruit break and a BBQ lunch for all students. There will be children attending from St Edward’s Primary School, Canowindra Public School, Canowindra High School and Cabonne Blayney Family Day Care.

The visiting author this year is Katrina Rowe. Katrina’s new book, Lily’s Balloon, has just been released by Wombat Books. Katrina’s first book, Marty’s Nut-Free Party was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Book of the Year 2012, and her second, Emily Eases Her Wheezes was a Notable Book in the 2015 CBCA Awards. Her third book, Same, is a true story about disability and difference while Gemma gets the Jitters deals with overcoming anxiety. Both were
shortlisted for the Caleb Prize. The whole community is welcome to come along on Thursday.
