HSIE
The HSC class have just finished the study of Agrippina the Younger, sister of the emperor Gaius, the wife of the emperor Claudius and the mother of the emperor Nero. She was a feisty and powerful woman who co-ruled with Claudius and Nero long before any woman was allowed any real power.
Students have completed essays under exam conditions and have shown that they are progressing steadily towards readiness for the HSC. Beginning today HSC students will explore the cities of Vesuvius: Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The Preliminary HSC class are working hard on their presentations on the characters of Homer’s The Iliad, an epic poem about the Trojan War. It is a brutal story with gods, heroes and warriors battling over the beautiful Helen of Troy.
The HSC class have just finished the study of Agrippina the Younger.
MUSIC
Mandatory Music Course (Stage 4)
All students in Years 7 and 8 complete the mandatory course for the School Certificate.
Students in Year 7 learn about music notation and The Instruments of the Orchestra whilst learning to play beginner level keyboard and glockenspiel.
Students in Year 8 learn about The History of Rock Music and its various styles, whilst learning to play basic guitar and drums. Year 8 students also build on the listening skills and notation skills developed in Year 7.
Each student has four notation books (designed to improve their ability to read and write music) to complete by the end of Year 8. There are two books for students to complete in Year 7 and two books for students in Year 8. Each of notation books is an assignment with marks included in the overall assessment of each class.
Additional Course (Stage 5)
Students in Years 10 have the option of studying Music for either 200 hours (Year 9 and 10) or 100 hours (Year 10 for one year). Students in this course will develop their keyboard skills whilst learning another individual instrument of their choice. It is expected that students will attend private Music lessons to improve their technical skills on the instrument of their choice.
This year, students in Year 10 will study Music of the Romantic Period, Film Music, Music and Advertising and Australian Music. Students in Year 10 have 4 assessment tasks involving performance, composition, listening and notation books.
It is expected that each Stage 5 student actively participates in every activity. Students need to bring their music (to play), music book and headphones each lesson.
Stage 6 – Music – Course 1 (HSC)
Students in Year 12 have the option of studying Music for another 200 hours. Students will study three topics of their own choice. As part of this course, students further develop their performance, aural (listening), musicology (music theory) and composition skills.
It is expected that each Stage 6 student actively participates in every activity and learns an instrument during their own time.
The Choir
Canowindra High School has a small choir which performs annually at Productions, Anzac Day and other school functions. Choir has started this term, with rehearsals being held at lunch on Thursdays. All students from Years 7-12 are invited to join the choir.
Rock Band
Last year, Canowindra High School Rock Bands had great success performing at various times and many of the members performed at school assemblies. Both Junior and Senior Rock Band rehearsals have started.
Junior Rock Band, students in Year 7-10, rehearses at lunchtime on Tuesday. The Senior Rock Band, students in Year 10-12, rehearses at lunchtime on Monday. Currently we have a range of vocalists, guitarists and drummers. New members are welcome as students are rotated through a range of repertoire.
Both Junior and Senior Rock Band rehearsals have started.
Music: Count Us In
This year, Canowindra High School has, again, registered to participate in the song that stops a nation. In 2013, approximately one third of the student population participated in the concert for Canowindra Public School Year 5 & 6 students.
This year, the selected song will be performed by students on October 30th. This will be the third year our school has participated in this National event, designed to involve thousands of students and adults to participate in playing and performing music.
Music: Count Us In is an initiative of Music: Play For Life, a campaign to involve more people to participate in music activities throughout Australia.
