Driver Training Simulator

29 November, 2017 By Canowindra Phoenix Editor

Last week, Year 10 students at the Canowindra High School had the opportunity to have a drive of the Young Rotary Driver Training
Simulator. The simulator, valued at $40,000, is the second of its type in NSW. It features a steering wheel and three screens, and tests
drivers in a number of different and challenging driving situations, including driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, texting whilst driving, night driving, various weather conditions, and road hazards such as people, animals and other vehicles.

Drivers start with 15 minutes of basic driving, followed by 15 minutes of challenging driving. The following is an account written by students Simon Budden, Jamie Austin and Wade Kinsela: “On Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd of November, Year 10 participated in a realistic driving simulator. This involved testing our driving skills when under the influence of drugs and alcohol and texting. It involved driving around a realistic environment whilst being coached by two Rotary Club members, Ken Harris and Frank Lincoln, on recommended safer driving techniques.

By learning these skills it has shown us the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and texting. A big thank you to Young and Cowra Rotary clubs for this experience, as it will greatly improve all our driving skills”.
