Last week Canowindra High School Captains Joanna Balcombe and Ciaran Etty attended the Secondary Schools Leadership Program at Government House, Sydney.
On Thursday morning they had a tour of NSW Parliament where they got to sit in on a Q&A session before heading to the Legislative Council to observe a debate.
“We met the Premier and local representatives before sitting in on a parliament debate, which was very interesting,” said Ciaran Etty.
Among those representatives was member for Orange Phillip Donato who spoke to the group of young leaders and asked for any questions.
Joanna and Ciaran then had the opportunity to go on a tour of Government House, where they met with David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales, before having a brief talk to the Governor and his wife.
“I think the best experience was actually just meeting the people in these roles and realising that they are just people like us,” said Joanna Balcombe.
The leadership program inspires young leaders to continue to pursue leadership roles after school and gives them an insight into the roles and responsibilities of our government.
“My biggest thing to take away was to manage your time, especially as a leader and to really put yourself out there, take opportunities and make yourself known,” said Ciaran Etty.
With only a short time left at Canowindra High School both Joanna and Ciaran plan on utilising there leadership skills, to then continue them on into the workforce.
